My Five Principles for Styling

Happy 2020 friends! I hope that everyone is off to a very productive start to the year. We over here at Elizabeth Carberry Creative are in full swing. We are easing into the year with a light January and February and gearing up for our busiest shoot and event season in the spring.

When designing my winter styling workshop I was finally able to put on paper the principles that I follow when conceptualizing any of my styling - tables capes, flat lays, content, literally anything!

So here are my 5 principles to style by:

  1. Surface: What are you shooting on? Where are you styling? Does it fit your overall vision - linen, wood, white board, fabric. Make sure it works!

  2. Layers: Think through the layered components of you space. If it’s a flatly then what are the pieces that you are using to create dimension - which props, how high or tall. If it’s a tablescape then what are you components - florals, dishwater, glassware. Create dimension in your layers!

  3. Design: What is the composition? How are you going to arrange your layers to fit the vision.

  4. Personality: Make it your own! Liking something on Pinterest? Or an IG feed? Great! But add something that makes it yours.

  5. Negative Space: This is a must for me personally but leaving room for layers and props and items to breathe is just as crucial as adding them. Letting certain elements stand on their own and not overdoing it can be just as effective as filling a space.

You don’t have to start with all five but work at least one into your next project!
