Shelf Styling 101
When we renovated our house 5 years ago there was one element that I knew I wanted to keep. In fact, I believe my words were “I will keep these even if I have to physically stand in front of them to protect them throughout renovations,” so when it comes to styling them, you know I mean business!
There is nothing I love more in a home than built in shelves! While most people love them, many do shy away from them because it is so overwhelming to decorate. I promise they are not overwhelming. In fact if you break them down into threes then it is easy as pie (also why is pie easy?!)
When I think of shelf styling I think in a rule of 3 that will help to really frame the shelf area and is almost foil proof.
1. The stabilizer: This is usually books or a vase, something somewhat neutral that acts as your base or starting point. It might be the right size or color for the space or maybe is the focal point because it’s meaningful. It should fill 2/3 of the space.
2. The background: A picture, art or standing book to show the cover. Maybe even a large plate or ceramic that can be flat against the wall! This should really just fill some of the white space (not ALL of the white space but some).
3. The wild card: I like to throw in the final element that is less meaningful, more acts as a pop of color, or fun accent. This piece could be literally anything but is meant to fill the remaining 1/3 that the stabilizer didn’t. My go-to’s are always a plant, a small art piece or a vase.
So what do you do if your shelves are very long? Take the length of the shelf and divide it visually in half or thirds and then style accordingly in those smaller sections as mentioned above.

Would love to see your shelfie!
