How to Pack for a Sunny Winter Family Vacation

Last year when H was six weeks old we set off for Disney and truthfully I was so overwhelmed by traveling with two kids, at very different ages. And when I say overwhelmed, I mean full meltdown mode 24 hours before departure - huge postpartum tears!! But, what I learned from that trip and carried with me into our trip to Aruba last month was 1. Don’t over pack and 2. If you’re going to a place that sells diapers somewhere you will be just fine!

Now, traveling to a warm place in the middle of winter can also be difficult because kids are not in the same sizes that they were the summer before nor the same size they likely will be the summer coming…. Sooooo that’s really fun! But beside navigating that issue here are my tips for sunny getaways in the winter with two toddlers.

  • Don’t over pack: Easier said than done but my rule is to always pack for two less days than you are actually going for. Think about how many times in a week you might wear the same outfit. You can do the same thing on vacation. Underwear is the only exception to this rule. I usually add a couple extra pairs. Otherwise… You can always hand wash things, wear again etc.

  • Pack an over night carry on: Especially if this is international travel! Pack a carry on that has one day and night for all. Bathing suits, change of clothes, pajamas! You’ll feel like you are ready for anything when you land.

  • Snacks are your friend: Bring enough snacks for the flight and then pack in your suitcase enough snacks for 48 hours of the trip until you really get settled and figure out where to get snacks that everyone wants while sitting on the beach.

  • Keep things familiar: Make sure to pack 2-3 things for each kid that is familiar. Something they play with, sleep with, eat or whatever daily that will remind them of home. That way in meltdown mode you have an excited go-to that will help calm them.

  • Sunscreen: The most expensive thing to buy if you aren’t going somewhere with a Target close by… Pack enough sunscreen to last you most of the week!

And if you are going somewhere near a target then just drink up! A good morning beverage on sunny winter family vacation does wonders!

Happy packing!
